Essaouira Day Trip from Agadir: A Practical Guide

Essaouira sea fortress and blue fishing boats

In short: Essaouira is one of the most rewarding day trips from Agadir. Count about 3 hours each way (around 175 km) on a road that follows the Atlantic north of Agadir before crossing argan country. With a private driver you leave when you want, stop where you like on the way, and get 4 to 5 hours in the medina and port before driving back.

Why Essaouira is worth the drive

Essaouira is a fortified port town whose medina is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 18th-century plan, sea ramparts and working fishing harbour give it a very different feel from Agadir, which was largely rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake. The town is compact and walkable, with whitewashed lanes, blue doors, craft workshops and a relaxed pace that suits a full day out.

The road from Agadir

The first part of the drive runs along the coast through Taghazout and Tamri, with views over surf beaches and banana plantations. North of Tamri the road climbs inland through hills covered in argan trees, the tree that produces argan oil and is found almost only in this part of Morocco. Useful stops on the way:

  • A coastal viewpoint north of Taghazout, best in the morning light.
  • An argan oil cooperative, where you can see how the nuts are cracked and the oil is pressed. Buying is never compulsory.
  • Argan trees with goats. You may see goats climbing argan trees beside the road. Be aware that some roadside groups are arranged by herders for photos and a tip is expected.

If you prefer to see more of the coast, the Taghazout and Imsouane coast tour is a separate, shorter day.

What to see in Essaouira

  • The port, with its blue fishing boats, boatyards and the Skala du Port tower. Mornings are the liveliest, when the catch comes in.
  • The Skala de la Ville, the sea bastion lined with old cannons, with a long view over the rocks and the ocean.
  • The medina: the main street and souks, the old Jewish quarter (Mellah), and woodworkers’ shops specialising in thuya wood.
  • The beach, a long sandy bay to the south of the town, popular for walks, kitesurfing and windsurfing.
  • Lunch: grilled fish near the port or a restaurant in the medina. Your driver can suggest places, and you choose.

The medina is pedestrian, so your driver drops you near one of the gates and meets you there at the time you agree.

Practical tips

  • Bring a windproof layer. Essaouira is known for strong winds, especially in summer, and it can feel much cooler than Agadir.
  • Start early to make the most of the time in town and to drive back in daylight.
  • Cash is useful for small purchases and cafés in the medina.
  • Want a guide in the medina? Mention it in your enquiry and we will tell you what is possible for your date.
